Easy Window Maintenance

It’s often stated by cleaning experts that you should at least clean the windows in your house twice a year if you are living outside the city, but quarterly if you live within the city. I don’t know about you, but I rarely clean my windows. It’s a stretch (or flat out lie) to say that I clean them once a year (please don’t judge me for that). It’s not that the bottle of Windex isn’t sitting there in plain view for me to see. It’s not even that I can’t see how dirty they are. It just seems like there are better more productive things to clean and I can see the results more quickly than with my window. It’s not always about cleaning the glass either. There are little cracks in the sills that always seem to trap dirt and grime, and how are you supposed to get that crud out of there without spending an enormous amount of time? I don’t know about you, but I have not built up enough patience in my life for sitting at the DMV for a long period of time, how or why why would I spend hours cleaning my windows even if it needs to get done? I guess the real answer to that question is why spend time cleaning anything? For me it does make me feel better once I vacuum the floors, so why am I so opposed to cleaning the windows? Because Is there really such a thing as easy window maintenance? I mean windows are way up high most of the time and if they’re not, the contractor that built your house put a big bush in front of the window outside to prevent break ins. This mean it’s impossible to clean the outside of the windows without a ladder–or a contraption you made of your own volition that is so wonky and off-kilter that you worry you might die while upon it. Trust me, we’ve all been there. So to keep you and I safe and sound and less opposed to cleaning our windows twice a year, I’ve compiled a simple list that might make this all-too-painful experience just a little bit easier.

  • Have a good attitude

  • Tackle one window at a time
  • The less you complain the faster it gets done
  • Use a toothbrush to get into those awful cracks (or a q-tip)
  • A vacuum can suck get some of those stubborn flies who have died in the window.
  • Microfiber Clothes can help get into the small cracks between the window tracks
  • Elbow Grease
  • Use a plastic putty knife to get into the cracks
  • Or, if you really want to save some time, upgrade to Conservation windows and choose Double Hung, which means you’ll be able to open and close them from the inside to clean them, hence saving you the hassle of hiring a company or getting up on a ladder yourself risking life and limb.

So let’s talk about these amazing windows for just a second.
