Is It Time To Replace Your Siding?

Are your walls crying out for some attention? Sometimes when home siding is going bad it can compromise the integrity of your home and literally leak through drywall on the inside. If this is happening, it is beyond a telltale sign that you have damaged siding. Damaged siding is not only hurting your curb appeal in the neighborhood, it is also costing you money on energy bills which will only go up if this issue is not resolved.  Not to mention that overlooked problems with siding can cause structural damage if not addressed early on.

Over time siding wears down. Luckily for you there are some simple signs that your siding is going bad. When performing a close up inspection of your home’s exterior be careful to look for:

  1. Cracked Siding: this can indicate old panels which can let moisture from the outside slip in.Cracked Siding
  2. Warped panels:  If you have found one or several warped panels use a simple screwdriver to poke beneath the warped siding, take note on how firm the layer under the siding reacts. This will inform you if this layer might be rotted.Warped Siding
  3. Dry Rot: Dry is a very specific and unique type of wood rot (Serpula Lacrymans). It is a wood destroying fungi/fungus which digests the part of the wood that gives it its strength and integrity. Depleting wood of such components leaves it in a brown brittle state which is very easy to spot.wood root , dry root , siding
  4. Mold or Mildew: is another way to tell if your siding needs to be replaced as it is letting water inside the wood.Mildew siding
  5. Peeling paint or loose wallpaper: can be an indication that your siding is allowing moisture to seep in into your walls. This can damage the interior of your home.
  6. Bubbles: in siding this is is a common problem with old or poorly installed siding. Bubbles in your siding means that water is finding its way underneath your siding and is collecting in pockets.
  7. Faded siding or loose siding: is not just an eyesore it can also indicate sun damage and water infiltration.

It really stood out to me when you explained that bubbles in the side of your home can be a sign that you need to replace the siding. I would imagine that replacing the siding by yourself is something that could prove to be really risky and expensive. I would think that hiring a contractor would be the best way to make renovations to the exterior of your home.

It’s good to know that moisture can be let in if there are cracks. Yesterday afternoon, I noticed cracks in the siding of my home while I was working in my garden, and I was wondering how to get the issue fixed. I’ll have to look into hiring a contractor that can install new siding for my home!
